Cellulose ethers are polymers produced by the chemical modification of cellulose. Cellulose ethers perform a variety of functions such as thickening, emulsification, film formation, colloid protection, water retention, and binding. In industrial production, cellulose ethers can be divided in to non-ionic cellulose ethers, ionic cellulose ethers, and mixed cellulose ethers generally. Compared with ionic cellulose ethers, non-ionic cellulose ethers perform better while its production costs are higher. The non-ionic cellulose ethers are mainly applied in construction industry, pharmaceuticals industry, daily chemicals industry, food industry, textile and dyeing industry, ceramics, coating material, polymerization, and paper making while ionic cellulose ethers are applied in petroleum industry, daily chemicals industry, rubber industry, leather industry, spinning, and paper making.

The application range and consumption quantity of cellulose ethers in a country are related to its economic development level. In developed countries, cellulose ethers have a wide application. The developed countries and regions such as Europe, North America and Japan are key cellulose ethers consuming counties and regions. Compared with developed countries, China still has a long path to go through in developing cellulose ethers. At present, China suffers from inferiority in application technology in cellulose ethers industry. Therefore, the application range of cellulose ethers is limited in China. However, with economic development in China, the market demand for cellulose ethers will increase as well.

In 2015, the production volume of cellulose ethers in China was 730.3 thousand tonnes while its apparent consumption volume was 702.1 thousand tonnes. It is predicted that the production volume of cellulose ethers in China will reach to 979.1 thousand tonnes while its apparent consumption volume realizing 92.47 thousand tonnes by 2021.
